Kids Billy Goat Cart Races

Then we bring on some goats,

With long hairy coats, I’m talking the sort that are feral.

Hitch them and kids, to go-carts on skids,

Set ‘em loose, for some old fashioned peril.

The thrills and spills, the mud and the muck, the Kids Goat Cart Races are not to be missed.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, goat racing (either with a cart or bareback) was a popular pastime appearing at school sports days, shows, and celebrations. Today, feral goats are rated by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) as a high priority pest (ref). Although the King of the Ranges Billy Goat races are a laugh a minute, there’s no competition when it comes to the annual goat races at Barcaldine, the ‘the goat racing capital of Australia’.
